the orwell bridge
the orwell bridge
29th January 2020
Having worked in Ipswich in the late 1990's I became quite familiar with it on my daily journey. Opened in December 1982 it completed the much needed bypass around Ipswich and the relentless heavy traffic bound for Felixstowe docks no longer rumbled through the town centre.

I needed a starting point for my project and this geographically being the furthest east seemed the natural place to start. I had never ventured off the well trodden path of the A14 and had no idea you could access the base of this majestic structure.
For some reason unknown to man, I am drawn to the delights of Brutalist Concrete Architecture and these pillars and posts really 'floated my boat' and form the main part of this set of photographs.
It was a bright and chilly winters afternoon when I visited this site just east of Wherstead in Suffolk and with the sun setting in the west a lovely golden glow was cast over the bridge brightening up the cold grey concrete and creating some warm reflections in the River Orwell.

The images below capture both the stark industrial concrete structure and the rural location on the banks of the River Orwell.

HALSTEAD TOWN v WOODFORD TOWN
Saturday 16th September - Kick Off 3.00pm Todays visitors to the Millbank Stadium were unbeaten league leaders Woodford Town. Thankfully the high lunchtime temperature had cooled a little and the sky was a little cloudier, but it was still a very warm early autumn afternoon. As expected from the kick off the league leaders took the game to Halstead and were soon on the attack, but Halstead weathered the early pressure and had a good period of pressure themselves, when totally against the run of play Woodford took the lead after 15 minutes. Undeterred, Halstead plugged away and deservedly equalised on 40 minutes with a Kane Gilbert header from Joel Older’s corner. This is how it remained for the rest of the first half and the teams went in level. Half Time Halstead Town 1 - 1 Woodford Town The second half saw Halstead pick up where they left off and took the game to the league leaders and really did look comfortable against what was formidable opposition and deservedly took the lead when Joel Older cut in from the left and let fly with a stinging left foot shot which gave the Woodford keeper no chance. Halstead had worked hard and there were obviously some tired legs out there on what was a draining afternoon and substitutions were made. With similarities to the Clacton home game where Halstead were in front, this seemed to have a detrimental effect on the rhythm of the team and the changes saw Woodford got back into the match and then only 3 minutes later scored what was to be the winner. Halstead piled on the pressure in added time and twice went close to snatching an equaliser, but it wasn’t to be. There has been quite a few comings and goings to the playing staff since last season and Halstead have a much stronger and competitive squad and have settled well into life in the Essex Senior League. They’ll be disappointed not to have claimed at least a point against Woodford who at this early stage of the season are looking a good bet for promotion.
