the orwell bridge
the orwell bridge

Having worked in Ipswich in the late 1990's I became quite familiar with it on my daily journey. Opened in December 1982 it completed the much needed bypass around Ipswich and the relentless heavy traffic bound for Felixstowe docks no longer rumbled through the town centre.
I needed a starting point for my project and this geographically being the furthest east seemed the natural place to start. I had never ventured off the well trodden path of the A14 and had no idea you could access the base of this majestic structure.
For some reason unknown to man, I am drawn to the delights of Brutalist Concrete Architecture and these pillars and posts really 'floated my boat' and form the main part of this set of photographs.
It was a bright and chilly winters afternoon when I visited this site just east of Wherstead in Suffolk and with the sun setting in the west a lovely golden glow was cast over the bridge brightening up the cold grey concrete and creating some warm reflections in the River Orwell.
The images below capture both the stark industrial concrete structure and the rural location on the banks of the River Orwell.

JAPAN
Between March 31st and April 7th we spent 7 nights in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo where explored the local area by foot. By accident we stumbled upon the magnificent Gyosen Park and Gardens where the Cherry Blossom was in full bloom. Unfortunately for us, the weather was un seasonally cold and wet which did dampen our experience, but despite thiswe enjoyed our time there.
Our Japanese friends Masa and Mayumi then took us on the most wonderful two day visit to the Hakone area south of Tokyo, where we enjoyed a train journey there, followed by a mountain train at Kanagawa up to a cable car which travelled over a volcano. Then a cruise on Lake Ashi and a walk in a beautiful National Park.
We then travelled by bus to a splendid spa hotel where we enjoyed a Japanese Banquet and Onsen Spa bath. The next day we explored the local area before visiting the magnificent Odawara Castle.
The trip was rounded off with a journey back to Tokyo on a Bullet Train. It was quite an experience and we are truly thankful to Masa and Mayumi for everything they did for us.
On our last day, Masa took me to a football match at the National Stadium. Again, another fantastic experience.
